FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS:
How old
must my child be to start School?
The state of Kansas
requires all students entering Kindergarten to be five years old by August 31st
of the school year. In keeping with this guideline, we require that students
entering our preschool class be either 3 by August 31st for our Pre-3 class, or
4 by August 31st for our Pre-4 class. Students entering our Pre-3 class must be
potty trained. Students entering our 2½ year old preschool class must be 2 by
February 28 so they will be 2½ by August 31st.
How much are Tuition and Fees?
Tuition payments run
September through May – please
contact our Admissions Counselor, Andrea Staples, for current tuition and fee
rates: 913-682-5553, or admissions@splcs.org.
Our Kindergarten thru 8th grade
is supported in part by St. Paul
Lutheran Church.
Our preschool is a self-supporting program that does not receive funding from
our congregation. There are no second child discounts for preschool students.
Do you have Daycare on site?
Our
Extended/Daycare is available for any student enrolled in St. Paul. We open at
6:45 AM and close at 5:15 PM. Students can use daycare on days that they are
normally not in class, for example, our 3-year-old students are in class on
Tuesday and Thursday's, but they can use the daycare on Monday, Wednesday and
Friday. Students must be 3 years old and potty trained to use our daycare.

Do you
offer School Lunches?
Hot
school lunches are available. If your child prefers to bring a cold lunch from
home, please make sure that no refrigeration is needed. Milk is also available
for purchase.
How are Daycare fees billed?
There
are two rates and options for daycare billing. The first is a drop-in rate of
$3.20 per hour. The fee is calculated from sign-in to sign-out, and will be
billed with your next month's tuition statement. For example, daycare used in
September will be on your October statement. The second option is the
contracted rate of $2.90 per hour. We have a form to fill out to figure when
daycare hours are needed each month, and then calculate your cost for the
month. This amount will be billed with your current month's tuition. For
example, you will prepay for your September daycare with your September tuition.
Is
Daycare available on days that school is not in session?
Daycare
is opened for most school holidays. The only days that daycare will be closed
are New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and
Christmas Day. Daycare will be open over the following holidays, Christmas
Break, Easter Break, President's Day; Veteran's Day as well as Teacher
In-service days. Children who are set up on the contract billing will be
charged the hourly rate for the period of time that they would normally be in
class. This will be on the tuition statement the following month.
Daycare
is available for students through the 2nd grade and reservations are required
for non–school days.
What is the Class size limit?
For our
preschool classes, the limit is 17. Over 12 students, the teacher will have an
aide.
What type of Curriculum do you use?
St.
Paul follows the Kansas Curriculum standards. Each teacher employs a copy of a
book called "Integrating the Faith" (published by Concordia
Publishing House). The textbooks that we use are ordered from the same
companies that the public schools use: such as Scott Foresman,
Addison Wesley, and Silver Burdett Ginn.

The Leavenworth Times – June 10, 2003
Contract
aids kids with special needs
By LISA HORN, Times
Lifestyles Editor
Parents of preschool
children who have special needs will have a new choice for their child's
education at the start of next school year. An interagency agreement between
the Leavenworth County Special Education Cooperative and St. Paul Lutheran
School was passed by the Leavenworth school board Wednesday.
Pending the approval of St. Paul's
board members, the agreement will go into effect Aug. 1. St. Paul's next
regular board meeting is scheduled for June 23.
The need for an early childhood
special education teacher at the school was identified and, as has been done in
the past, parochial schools such as St. Paul would contract out such services
from the Co-op. This year alone, however, the Co-op worked with at least 16 St.
Paul students.
"It was a win-win for both
organizations," said Barbara Freivogel, director
of early childhood programs for the Leavenworth County Special Education
Cooperative.
The case of St. Paul is a unique
one in that the teacher who will be teaching the special needs children is
currently a St. Paul teacher, recently receiving her early childhood special
education certification. When the program is implemented, she will be an
employee of the Leavenworth County Special Education Co-op, although she will
work out of St. Paul Lutheran.
"So they're not losing a
teacher; we're not bringing someone in new to the St. Paul school system,"
said Jay Floetke, principal of St. Paul Lutheran School.
Eighteen slots for special needs children
will be provided, with six slots in the two-day, three-day and four-day
programs. One or more para-educators will also be
provided to help facilitate the program.
The Co-op will also provide special
equipment or materials needed by the children in the program and if necessary,
provide other support staff.
St. Paul Lutheran preschool will
charge the same enrollment and material fees to special needs children as they
would for the other children enrolled in the preschool program.
"What we're doing at St. Paul
is just the tip of the iceberg," Freivogel said.
Floetke agreed, and like Freivogel, hopes that other preschools in the area will be
able implement such a program in the future.
Keeping special needs children in
the classroom environment is crucial for development, Freivogel
noted.
Programs like St. Paul's are
utilized as much as possible depending on how serious a specific child's needs
are.
Other special education classrooms
across the county include: Two classrooms at Ben Day Elementary, one at Anthony
and Lawson Elementary schools; two at the Fort Leavenworth schools, one at
Lansing Elementary School and one classroom at Basehor Elementary.
"They were looking to place
people here who would not have chosen St. Paul," Floetke said. "We
were in the right place at the right time."
